Summary

The 50 contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras。

But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner。

What’s a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness。

Very glad I'm not a beauty queen。 But also, wow girls are tough! Very glad I'm not a beauty queen。 But also, wow girls are tough! 。。。more

Great beginning and ending。 The middle was kinda of a drag

So hilarious, but turns into a bit of a mess t the end。 All the beauty queens are great, but the evil corporation/world takeover plot took away from it。 Still thoroughly enjoyable。

Surprisingly, much better than expected。 Certainly there is fluff and nonsense aplenty, But there is also quite a bit of heart and soul。

I keep having to remind myself that this book is written for teen girls。 Which then makes me go down the path of memories to when I was a teenage girl。 Would I have liked this book? I wasn't the target market for this book, even then。 Which is fine。 It's a fun read, I guess(?) Written as if you are watching a feminist version of a Hallmark action made for tv movie。 With romance, violence and completely ridiculous predicaments abounding and a healthy dose of social commentary along for the ride。 I keep having to remind myself that this book is written for teen girls。 Which then makes me go down the path of memories to when I was a teenage girl。 Would I have liked this book? One of the funniest, most enjoyable books I've read in a long time! This is pure satire with a lot of good points well made。 I can't stop talking about so I hope my friends will read it soon! Is it me or is this a Miss Congeniality movie to book adaptation?Adina reminded me so much of Grace portrayed by Sandra Bullock!!。A few issues with the cliches and model stereotypes。Characters were shallow at times resulting in a deduction of a star。My favorite was Taylor。She was sassy but sweet。Supermodel and soldier。Mean but honest。The plot was predictable and coincided with the Miss Congeniality movie。So a star less for unoriginality。Though lighthearted and relatable。Cheesy and fluffy feel go Is it me or is this a Miss Congeniality movie to book adaptation?Adina reminded me so much of Grace portrayed by Sandra Bullock!!。A few issues with the cliches and model stereotypes。Characters were shallow at times resulting in a deduction of a star。My favorite was Taylor。She was sassy but sweet。Supermodel and soldier。Mean but honest。The plot was predictable and coincided with the Miss Congeniality movie。So a star less for unoriginality。Though lighthearted and relatable。Cheesy and fluffy feel good YA! 。。。more

3。5/5 actually。 imagine The Wilds but as a black comedy。 Some of the girrrl powerrrr aspects of this aged a bit poorly but the overall pure camp of this makes it a thoroughly fun and enjoyable read。

Really loved this, despite my copy missing pages 301-332, I still rate it a strong 4 stars, anime style humour, great characters, a rip roaring read。 If you want a chilled summer read, with a little bite, this is a solid pick。 If I missed anything particularly exceptional in those 31 pages and you see this, drop me a line ><

This book was really fun。 Imagine the Amazon show The Wilds, but make it satire, turned up to 11。 I highly recommend the audiobook, which is narrated by the author。 Recommend for readers who like absurd yet amusing and sometimes sweet satire with a wide range of characters and storylines。

Haha, lol。 That was pretty funny, but also pretty over the top。 It kind of felt like reading a parody, but I'm pretty sure that was the point。 I loved the characters, even the most annoying Taylor。 Don't get me wrong, I thought all of these characters were annoying as hell, and pretty dumb。 And I hated the discussions and questioning of Petra's gender, fucking really hated that。 Yes, the book tackles transphobia, but I didn't expect the harsh transphobia before reading the book, and it's somethi Haha, lol。 That was pretty funny, but also pretty over the top。 It kind of felt like reading a parody, but I'm pretty sure that was the point。 I loved the characters, even the most annoying Taylor。 Don't get me wrong, I thought all of these characters were annoying as hell, and pretty dumb。 And I hated the discussions and questioning of Petra's gender, fucking really hated that。 Yes, the book tackles transphobia, but I didn't expect the harsh transphobia before reading the book, and it's something I would rather stay away from。 Over all, it was fine, it was a time。 。。。more

This was a fun book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would。 I feel like this would make a great TV show。 As a book, it felt a little drawn out。 I liked the fact that the author included such a diverse cast of characters, even though there might have been too many and I really struggled to remember names at one point。 And I know it's intentional, but I couldn't stand some of the characters, like Taylor。 My favorite characters would have to be Adina and Petra。 This was a fun book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would。 I feel like this would make a great TV show。 As a book, it felt a little drawn out。 I liked the fact that the author included such a diverse cast of characters, even though there might have been too many and I really struggled to remember names at one point。 And I know it's intentional, but I couldn't stand some of the characters, like Taylor。 My favorite characters would have to be Adina and Petra。 。。。more

I can appreciate some satirical humour, but this was just so overdone and not at all my cup of tea。

To say this book was interesting would be a huge understatement!! This book was INSANE! I wasn’t sure what to expect from it at first I picked it up because of the name Libby Bray and the cover dragged me in。 I thought it was romance about some girl。 But that’s not what I got lol it made me laugh and parts and question what I was hearing at others。 I feel like that’s how you know you read great book!

I think if I had read this physically I wouldn't have liked it as much, but as it stands the audiobook was a pure experience and listened like a tv show。 It is, at heart, a satire, so of course the characters were very stereotypical and played up too that almost to a fault, but as ridiculous as I found the whole thing it was a ridiculous amount of fun and I appreciated the light-heartedness, but also the deeper messages underlying it all。 In short, this was a read I did not expect to like, but i I think if I had read this physically I wouldn't have liked it as much, but as it stands the audiobook was a pure experience and listened like a tv show。 It is, at heart, a satire, so of course the characters were very stereotypical and played up too that almost to a fault, but as ridiculous as I found the whole thing it was a ridiculous amount of fun and I appreciated the light-heartedness, but also the deeper messages underlying it all。 In short, this was a read I did not expect to like, but it definitely grew on me, and I think the style in particular was something I liked - the footnote additions, ad breaks and little bits on top of the girls' POVs and the secret agent on the island served to round out the entire novel。 The plot was very farfetched and this was in no way realistic even if it did pick up on and handle many issues we do face in our world。 In short, this was a mess, but it was a fun mess and I can appreciate that。 。。。more

This book was silly。 There were a few times that I laughed out loud。 It definitely calls it the ridiculous marketing and double standards applied to women and girls in the media。 There were also a few times the story was so over the top cheesy it made me roll my eyes。 I feel like she tried to include too many storylines/character types and then quickly tied everything up in a nice little bow。 Overall It was an entertaining quick read。

trixie !!

okay, I picked up this book since the premise was super interesting。 I was a bit hesitant and I almost dropped the book, but once the plot started picking up I did not regret reading it at all! I loved how wild and crazy this book went。 The characters were so funny to read and really brightened up the book。 I thought the feminism message was a nice touch, and it was prevalent throughout。 It was a good read and I still find myself laughing at some of the scenes to this day。

think: cabin in the woods meets miss congeniality meets legally blonde, and now make it full of tongue in cheek dark humour。 that's Beauty Queens。 this was one of those books i grew up seeing in the library all the time and never gave it a second thought, i thought it would be like the girl-version of Lord of the Flies and just focus on the social aspect of girls' friendships, and i guess that just goes to show my own internalised misogyny。 there are obvious Golding influences of course, but Bea think: cabin in the woods meets miss congeniality meets legally blonde, and now make it full of tongue in cheek dark humour。 that's Beauty Queens。 this was one of those books i grew up seeing in the library all the time and never gave it a second thought, i thought it would be like the girl-version of Lord of the Flies and just focus on the social aspect of girls' friendships, and i guess that just goes to show my own internalised misogyny。 there are obvious Golding influences of course, but Beauty Queens is a work that stands all on its own。 this was a campy and fun social critique of the way society treats young girls and shapes the perceptions of their own self worth。 it's definitely YA, thought there are discussions of sex and swearing, though neither are very explicit。 it's not a revolutionary text on gender theory or anything but i think the characters are given proper nuance and complexity they deserve so the feminist critique never feels forced to didactic。 the diversity in this book is awesome! off the top of my head, nicole is black, shanti is indian, petra is trans, jen is a lesbian, and sosie is questioning and deaf/HOH。 i loved all the girls gradually trusting each other and learning from one another。 this is such a fun read, the plot occasionally borders on the unbelievably absurd but never to an extent that it was a dealbreaker, and the absurdity honestly fits right in with the writing style。 the story is interspersed with quirky little commercial breaks and insight into the antagonists' plans, and the whole format is very unique。 i feel like my enjoyment of the story was enhanced by the audiobook, which performed all the accents and had lots of sound effects to indicate commercial breaks and footnotes and explosions etc, so that was a nice surprise and i would highly recommend the audio version if you can get your hands on it。 this was a good time, i'm sorry i misjudged it when it first came out ten years ago, i've come around now <3 。。。more

Okay, so this book is rated on a different scale than most my book。 Okay so let's say you watch Avatar and then you watch Spaceballs。 I love both, but to compare would be impossible。 Btw。。。 this falls on the Spaceballs side。 With the stupid, funny rather than the emotional, serious。 Okay, so this book is rated on a different scale than most my book。 Okay so let's say you watch Avatar and then you watch Spaceballs。 I love both, but to compare would be impossible。 Btw。。。 this falls on the Spaceballs side。 With the stupid, funny rather than the emotional, serious。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this author’s satire in regard to beauty, race, feminism, LGBTQ issues, and more。 A female Lord of the Flies of teen beauty pageant contestants who crash land on an island and have to work together to survive without hair straighteners and a nearby mall。 It was laugh out loud funny throughout, even through the credits。 Great recommendation, Tom Starkweather! This book felt like Christopher Guest and Drop Dead Gorgeous and hints of Miss Congeniality and some Lord of the Flies mixed in。 I imagine Ladybird played by someone like Parker Posey。 MoMo feels a little like a character we'd see on Archer, working with Barry。 Beauty Queens is pretty ridiculous but a super fun, tongue in cheek read。 I think it could be shorter though。 The story wasn't strong enough for 400 pages- finishing the book felt more like a task than enjoyment。 However, not mad I read i This book felt like Christopher Guest and Drop Dead Gorgeous and hints of Miss Congeniality and some Lord of the Flies mixed in。 I imagine Ladybird played by someone like Parker Posey。 MoMo feels a little like a character we'd see on Archer, working with Barry。 Beauty Queens is pretty ridiculous but a super fun, tongue in cheek read。 I think it could be shorter though。 The story wasn't strong enough for 400 pages- finishing the book felt more like a task than enjoyment。 However, not mad I read it。 。。。more

I am just a huge fan of Libba Bray。 Her mind spews goodness into the world。 This book seems like pure silliness, but there are actually underpinnings with some heft if you look for them。
